Taxpayers' Bill of Rights #3:

RIGHT TO PAY NO MORE THAN
THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF TAXES

May 1, 2023

Taxpayers have the right to pay only the amount of tax legally due, including interest and penalties, and to have the IRS apply all tax payments properly.

The Right To Pay No More Than the Correct Amount of Taxes

If you discover that you filed a Tax Return with an error, you have the right to file an Amended Tax Return to change or correct the error.

If you disagree with an adjustment to your Tax Return made by the IRS for a math or other error, you have the right to request the IRS to correct their mistake if filed within 60 days.

If the IRS has assessed taxes after the period allowed by law or in violation of law or by mistake, you have the right to request that the amount due be corrected.

You have the right to request that any interest be removed if the IRS caused an unreasonable delay or error.

You have the right to submit an Offer in Compromise if you believe that you don't owe some or all of the amount claimed by the IRS.

If you are paying sums of money due the IRS via an Installment Agreement, you have the right to receive an annual statement of all payments made and remaining balances
