Actions to Take for Victims of IRS Identity Theft

November 1, 2023

You may not know you're a victim of identity theft until you're notified by the IRS of a possible issue with your return.

If you, without any action on your part, unexpectedly receive letters with any of the following notices from the IRS, you may be the victim of tax-related identity theft:

  • Request for information on a tax return you did not file
  • A duplicate Social Security number prevents you from filing your tax return electronically
  • An unrequested tax transcript
  • An online IRS account was created
  • Your online account was accessed or disabled
  • You owe additional tax or refund offset, or that you have had collection actions taken against you for a tax year no tax return was filed
  • IRS records indicate that you received wages or other income from an employer for which you didn't work
  • You've been assigned an Employer Identification Number (EIN)
